Scott Seffens , Folsom High School Baseball Coach

Jim Bennett, Del campo High School Baseball Coach

Sacramento County Sports Page:  For those of readers who have not lived in the Sacramento County area for very long, how many years have you been coaching and where have you coached?

Seffens: I was the head coach at River City for 6 years and now the co head coach at Folsom for 2 years. Before that I coached at College of San Mateo

Sacramento County Sports Page:  Did you play any high school or college sports? Where did you attend school and what sports did you play?

Seffens: I played baseball in high school at Carlmont High School in Belmont Ca. We won the CCS Division II section championships in 1992 and 1993

Sacramento County Sports Page: What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment as a coach?

Seffens: My first year at River City we brought up 5 sophomores who started for us and we won the league. Also, my first year at Folsom we won the Delta River League when we had never made the playoffs in Division 1.

Sacramento County Sports Page: Is there someone in your life, as a kid or as an adult, who inspired you to get into coaching?

Seffens: Doug Williams, the head coach at College of San Mateo was my college coach and my high school coach. When he coached me in high school I knew I wanted to coach. Also my summer ball coach, Kenny Ray, taught me so much about running a program and game management

Sacramento County Sports Page: What is your coaching philosophy, if you have one?

Seffens: I would say playing small ball. We try to be good at all aspects of that. It is the one thing that I feel you must do when you face a team with a dominant pitcher, which there are many in our league. We want teams to have to defend all aspects of our offense.

Sacramento County Sports Page: What is it that you enjoy most about coaching?

Seffens: Probably having former players come back to see the program. I believe it means that you meant something to them and they really enjoyed the time that they played for you.

Sacramento County Sports Page: If your players could tell us something about you that only they would know (a routine, a superstition, etc), what would that be?

Seffens: That however many times I give them advice on something they still think they know it all. They would hate to admit that I was right. As I tell them, high school kids come and go, but each year high school kids go through the same things and have the same problems. I've seen what happens so you might want to listen.

Sacramento County Sports Page: For those who have not seen your team play, what would you like people to know about the players on your team? Who should we watch for?

Seffens: Our catcher, Michael Quesada, has a scholarship to the University of Arizona . He is rated as one of the top catchers in California.

Sacramento County Sports Page: Does your team have a rival?

Seffens: I guess our Rivals would be Jesuit and Pleasant Grove just for the fact that they are always going to be good, and you have to go through them to win the league.

Sacramento County Sports Page: How many more years would you like to coach?

Seffens: Well I'm 31 and I have been a head coach for 8 years. I would imagine I would coach until I retire which would give me around 40 years of coaching.
